CONTEMPORARY FIGURES
Society of Scottish Artists,  May 21 to June 20, 2021

An online exhibition highlighting a range of human experiences, emotions and representation by SSA members. Contemporary Figures, curated by SSA council members Duncan Robertson and Jenny Pope, is a timely exploration of human connections at a period when we are all missing real “in-person” interactions with friends, family and other artists.

Dock Dreamer
oil on board, 24" x 36"
Artist Statement
Exploring a sense of place and a special moment lost in time, Dock Dreamer embraces the quiet and stillness of a young boy basking in the sun. Blending marks of realism, and abstraction, along with a dreamy palette of blue and green hues; an illusory, almost magical space is created to invite the viewer into this intimate moment and place of wonder.

Included in the ASA curated exhibition titled Frozen in Time.
Showing at Southern Jubilee Auditorium, Calgary and Northern Jubilee Auditorium, Edmonton.
January thru September 2020

Girl #1 - Mastery
oil on canvas, 36" x 24"

In this piece my intent is to capture a sense of courage, fortitude and prowess. Mastery - Rooted firmly on the edge of her world, she wrangles with all her strength and determination to hold back the forces that threaten her.
Picture
Girl #2 - Dominion
oil on canvas, 36" x 24"

In this piece my intent is to capture a sense of freedom, energy and hope.  Dominion - At the top of her world, standing firmly on her own two feet, she finds a serine strength and surrenders to the forces outwith her control to trust what will be.
Artist Statement
Earth, this place where we live, filled with the dichotomies of nature, reverberates with all its beauty and flaws through our human existence. It is what sustains us and threatens us in equal measure. Exploring ideas around earthly dwelling and human psyche I created a series of storied pieces centred around a young girl

Two pieces i
ncluded in the ASA curated exhibition titled Earth.
Touring Alberta September 2019 thru September 2020 (Calgary Central Library, AGA Community Gallery and Walterdale Theatre, Edmonton, and other location tba)

She Then is Still Now
oil on canvas, 10" x 12"
Artist Statement
Invisibility has always been a reality of the feminine realm and one that resonates more profoundly as we age. Using an image of my younger self – presented in soft translucent tones, entwined in ribbons of gentle greys and weaving vines – I am suggesting a lightness of impression, an invisibleness that signifies certain female tropes that abide with us throughout our lives. At the same time there’s a liveliness and energy echoed in the ribbons and vines along with the confident gaze and pose of the subject that acknowledges a strength that will last beyond what is first seen.

Included in the ASA curated exhibition titled AGEism
Showed at the Fish Creek Library, Calgary and the Glenrose Mezanine Gallery
June thru December 2019
